Smustard FAQ - Open questions

Smustard FAQ has answers to the most common questions about Smustard ruby scripts for SketchUp

I just bought: presentationbundle.zip, exim.zip, and pageExIm.zip. Re: presentationbundle.. ... (Timothy Hall)

I just bought: presentationbundle.zip, exim.zip, and pageExIm.zip.

Re: presentationbundle..
1. I used the ark and line tools to draw a compound flight path. When I select the compound set and ask FlightPath2 to target a single path it only works on the first segment. Must I run it for only one segment at a time, or is there a way to have it do'em all at once?
2. How does "Target Path" work? Does it look tangentially forward?

Re: pageExIm..
3. After setting camera positions in a Sketchup document, I used View:Pages:Export. The result was a new document at the same location as the original, named the document's name.sup. I then opened another document (a near copy of the first one, but without any added pages) and chose Ciew:Pages:Import. It asked me to select a document, and I assumed I should choose the one ending in .sup? Well, it didn't work. Any ideas?

I also downloaded Stitcher..
4. It doesn't seem to work.
I drew an arc, duplicated it on the blue axis, and scaled it up a bit (about 1.5x). I then selected both arcs, and chose stitcher, and it asked me to select faces. So, I then closed the arcs to make faces, and ran it again. This time it drew a single line between them. Any ideas?

And finally, I'm considering Repaint..
5. What does it do? You say a selected texture, from where though? I am looking for a way to replace textures from the eyedropper tool in the texture/color chooser without having to do so much messing around.

You see, when I import a new texture into the color chooser, the size that it imports it in as is not what I usually need, and I am loth to know how to come up with the right numbers (the first time) to make it fit properly on my model when I paint it on. Of course, that's never a problem when painting it onto a plain, but when I paint it onto a non-coplainer surface, it never is easy to get the size right.

I have therefore taken to an alternate set of methods; like, for example, creating a parallel plain directly over the contour item slated to eventually get the paint job, and import in the texture to the upper plain. Then after re sizing it there, I use the eyedropper tool to extract the texture, and then finally the paint bucket tool to apply the properly re sized texture to the contour.

What I want to be able to do is save the texture into the colors well as a properly sized texture, so I can reuse it again later without having to go through all these steps each time.

Is this what Repaint is made to do?

Please advise.

And sorry for all the questions at one time.

Thanks.

Excellent site - hope it goes well!

There has been a lot of talk about setting the correct perspective (camera position etc.) for a photograph so one can set a model up with the correct background.

Is there any intention of solving this problem with a Ruby script?

I'm using the new Flightpath tool (which was the best $10 I've spent!) and I'm trying to use the new Target Path Option. The problem I'm running into is with the Flightpath. I've welded lines but the script isn't recognizing the proper direction of the lines. I have to slowly weld each line together, test the path, make sure it's going in the right direction, and then move onto the next line in the flight path. Is there an easier way to draw the proper direction of the line/ curve from the begining, or is it all trial and error on getting it the right way? (it be really cool if there was a way to build a line/ curve that had arrows so you knew which direction the line was headed.)

I bought Rick's Flightpath 2 and have been trying to use it on one of my models [which I would have liked to attach - but I cant seem to do it through this forum].

I created a circle around the model [which is a very simple model and used a single point for the camera to focus on. The resulting slide show is choppy, while I have seen many 'very smooth' avi's and animations.

I have tried circles with 10 vertices and a 100. Speeds of 4m/s and 100m/s - nothing seems to eliminate the problem. Kept Page delay to 0 and enabled page transition.

Also, I cant seem to edit flightpath settings. I have to restart all over again.

Please advise

I purchased the presentation bundle and I really like it. FlightPath2 is fun to use. I'm trying to do something with it that I thought would be simple and maybe I just don't understand how it or Sketchup works. I'd like to define a path for FlightPath2 to operate on that is a straight line but for some reason the flightpath menu on the right click dialog doesn't show up when I choose a straight line (made with the pencil tool). The freehand lines and arcs work but I really want a straight line. Any pointers you can give me?

Thanks for your help in advance.

I just purchased the FlightPath2 script by Rick Wilson, and am having similar problems as others here that are not getting this script to provide an easy solution to creating animation scenes along a path. I have tried every which way for the past few hours to configure a flight path that I think the script could recognize (welded lines, curves that are not too complex and such), and just can't get the script to produce a set of scenes. Nothing. The only scenes I can easily create are along a straight line - and of course I could have done that myself. So, as others have asked, am I missing something in the flight path setup process? It's certainly not easy.

attributes.rb allows you to set attributes for entities.

I have done this with components, but when I subsequently place the component the new attributes are not placed with the component.

Is it possible to add attributes and store them with a component so they are brought back with the component each time it is used?

Thanks.

I'm very interested in your Hide scripts but one thing has me concerned: the script descriptions say to use UnDo to reverse the hiding. This is not a practical option if the purpose of the hiding is to enable making modifications to the drawing. Am I misreading the instructions and are you actually providing a menu option that UnDoes the Hide, or are the scripts just meant for display purposes and not actual work?

I am currently using skechup to create models for ... (Aaron Smith)

I am currently using skechup to create models for lighting calculations for a program called AGI32 which only imports .dwg file formats. This process works for well very simple models, but not so well for complex models. This is because when I export models from SketchUP as .dwg files, then open the file up in AutoCAD, the model surfaces are of a polyface mesh type. Turns out that the Polyface meshes are actually triangulated 3D Faces and for complex models there can be many of these. In order to expose the 3D faces in ACAD I must explode all, then region all the model. After regioning all I Union all and for simple models I end up with a model made up of regions instead of triangulated polyface meshes. For complex models I end up with a mess. I would like to know if you think it is possible to develop a script that allows models to be exported to .dwg format as regions instead of triangulated polyface meshes??

Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Just wondering if you could help me with ... (James Harrison)

Hi

Just wondering if you could help me with one of your scripts, i downloaded the group by texture script, hoping to create groups from the textures in my model to export into 3d max for a uni project, but the script doesn't create groups in my model,

i did a test using a simple square while sketchup had the default man in the model and it grouped the colours of his face, shirt etc.. when i applied these colours to the square it grouped them along with his shirt and face, it seems the script only works with the 3 colours of the default man and not any other assigned colour.

is there something else i need to do with sketchup, i have a large model to render in 3d max and this script would save me a lot of time and stress!

many thanks for your help.
